Uba Sani Pledges Support for Tax Ombud to Boost Kaduna Revenue

Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has pledged his administration’s support for the Office of the Tax Ombud as the state seeks to align its tax administration with ongoing national reforms.

The governor made the commitment on Tuesday when he received the Tax Ombud and Chief Executive Officer, Dr John Nwabueze, who paid a courtesy visit to the Kaduna State Government House.

Sani said effective collaboration between federal and state institutions was necessary to build a strong and sustainable tax system capable of generating sufficient revenue for development.

He described the Tax Ombud’s role as crucial to improving taxpayers’ confidence, particularly at the state level. According to him, a fair, transparent and efficient tax system would strengthen Kaduna’s economic competitiveness and attract more investment.

The governor also commended Nwabueze for engaging stakeholders and promoting awareness of the free mediation and alternative dispute-resolution services available to taxpayers through the Office of the Tax Ombud.

He said greater awareness of taxpayers’ rights and legitimate channels for resolving complaints would build trust in the tax system and encourage voluntary compliance.

Nwabueze, in his remarks, assured the governor that the Tax Ombud’s office would work closely with Kaduna State to improve public confidence in tax administration, resolve legitimate grievances and create a more predictable environment for businesses.

He explained that the Office of the Tax Ombud complements state governments’ efforts to improve their fiscal positions by providing an independent mechanism for taxpayers to seek redress when they believe they have been unfairly treated by tax or revenue authorities.

“Tax compliance and taxpayer rights must go hand in hand if we are to achieve the increased tax-to-GDP growth that Nigeria needs,” Nwabueze said.

He further stressed that the quality of tax administration at the state level affects how citizens perceive taxation and their willingness to fulfil their tax obligations.

Nwabueze urged Kaduna State to work closely with the Joint Revenue Board and the Office of the Tax Ombud to develop a trusted tax system that can generate resources for development, encourage investment and protect taxpayers’ rights.

He also appealed to Governor Sani to support taxpayer education, voluntary compliance and constructive engagement among the Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service, taxpayers and the Tax Ombud’s office.
