Tigray Forces Seize Control of Major Airport in Northern Ethiopia

Tigrayan rebel forces in northern Ethiopia have taken control of Alula Aba Nega Airport in Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray region, according to security and local sources.

An airport employee told AFP that workers were informed by their supervisor that Tigray forces had taken over the airport. As there were no scheduled flights, employees were instructed to return home.

A security source at a Western embassy also confirmed the takeover.

The development comes amid growing tensions between forces in Tigray and Ethiopia’s federal government, raising concerns over a possible escalation of conflict in the region.
