The Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) has commended President Bola Tinubu for commencing the payment of N18 billion in outstanding severance benefits to about 2,700 former workers of the defunct Nigeria Airways.
The union described the payment as a long-awaited relief for beneficiaries who had waited for more than two decades to receive their entitlements.
In a statement signed by its National President, Godwin Abumisi, the NUP said its repeated appeals to the Federal Government had finally yielded results.
The union said many former Nigeria Airways workers had struggled with medical expenses, feeding and family responsibilities while waiting for their benefits, adding that some beneficiaries died before receiving their entitlements.
The NUP also praised the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, the Federal Ministry of Finance and other government agencies involved in the verification and processing of the payments.
However, the pensioners urged the government to ensure that the exercise is completed transparently and that genuine beneficiaries whose cases remain unresolved are captured during the mop-up verification.
The union specifically called for attention to cases involving incorrect bank details and deceased beneficiaries, whose entitlements should be transferred to their lawful next of kin or estates after proper verification.
“Please finish what you have started. Let every genuine beneficiary be captured and paid,” the union appealed.
The NUP also welcomed the commencement of an additional N1.1 billion in exit benefits for 175 retirees who left the Federal Public Service between January and August 2026.
Meanwhile, the union renewed its call for payment of the three-month N25,000 monthly palliative approved for pensioners following the removal of the fuel subsidy in 2023.
According to the union, pensioners are still waiting for the payment three years after it was approved, stressing that the funds would provide relief amid the country's economic challenges.
The NUP further appealed to the Federal Government to address outstanding pension arrears, gratuities and other retirement benefits owed to former public servants, including pensioners at the state and local government levels.
The union stressed that pension and gratuity payments are legitimate entitlements earned through years of service and should not be treated as acts of charity or favour.
