National Assembly Clarifies: Only State Police Bill Sent to 36 States

The National Assembly has clarified that only the Constitution Alteration Bill seeking to establish State Police Services has so far been transmitted to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration.

The clarification followed reports suggesting that all the proposed Constitution Alteration Bills before the National Assembly had already been forwarded to the state legislatures.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, the National Assembly said the State Police Bill was the only constitutional amendment proposal transmitted to the states.

Ogunlana recalled that on September 16, 2026, the National Assembly announced the transmission of the 1999 Constitution (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, titled: “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Provide for the Establishment of State Police Services; and for Related Matters.”

He said the National Assembly prioritised the bill in response to widespread public demands and concerns over security and policing in the country.

According to him, the remaining Constitution Alteration Bills will only be transmitted to the 36 State Houses of Assembly after they have been passed in identical form by both chambers of the National Assembly.

The National Assembly said it remained committed to ensuring that the constitutional amendment process was conducted transparently and in accordance with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

It also urged the public and the media to rely on official communications from the National Assembly for accurate information on the status and transmission of the various Constitution Alteration Bills.
