Former US Vice President Kamala Harris has joined Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed on the campaign trail in Detroit, as Democrats seek to strengthen party unity ahead of the November midterm elections.
El-Sayed, who won the Democratic Senate primary in August, said Harris’s visit was aimed at bringing together different groups within the Democratic Party, particularly voters in Wayne County, home to Detroit’s predominantly Black electorate.
The appearance comes after a divisive Democratic primary in which El-Sayed defeated four-term Congresswoman Haley Stevens, who had received strong backing from the Democratic establishment and pro-Israel political action committees.
Harris and El-Sayed took part in a roundtable discussion on reproductive health at Birth Detroit on Tuesday. El-Sayed also highlighted economic concerns, saying both he and Harris wanted to address the struggles facing voters.
Michigan’s Arab-American voters remain an important factor in the state’s politics. Many Arab-American voters had moved away from the Democratic Party during the 2024 presidential election, citing Harris’s position on Israel and the Biden administration’s support for the country.
El-Sayed said Democrats must confront their past differences and focus on issues that unite voters.
“We don’t have to agree on everything to understand what is at stake,” he said, calling for voters to unite around shared economic priorities.
El-Sayed will face former US Representative Mike Rogers, the Republican Senate nominee backed by President Donald Trump, in November’s election. Rogers’s campaign described Harris’s appearance as a sign of weakness for the Democrats.
Harris’s visit comes as Democrats work to consolidate support across Michigan ahead of the midterm elections.
