Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says its Aerospace Force has intercepted and destroyed another US MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Press TV, the IRGC said the drone was brought down on Monday using a new air-defence system integrated into Iran’s national air-defence network.
The MQ-1 Predator is a medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft that was previously operated by the US military before being replaced largely by the MQ-9 Reaper.
Press TV reported that the US Congressional Budget Office has confirmed the loss of at least 24 MQ-9 Reaper drones since February 28, with the losses estimated at about $720 million. Iran, however, claims it has shot down 53 US MQ-9 drones during the conflict.
The report also said an MQ-4C Triton reconnaissance drone had previously been destroyed, with an estimated value of about $150 million.
The latest claim comes a day after Iran’s Army said it had shot down an Orbiter reconnaissance drone over the Strait of Hormuz using locally developed air-defence systems in southeastern Iran.
Iran has also maintained that it has closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to what it describes as US military interference and violations in regional waters. Tehran says the waterway will remain closed until US interference in regional maritime affairs ends.
