Iran Cancels Baghdad, Muscat Flights as US Aviation Sanctions Take Effect

Iran has cancelled flights from Tehran to Baghdad in Iraq and Muscat in Oman as new United States sanctions targeting Iranian airlines take effect.

Majid Akhavan, spokesman for Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization, said airports in Baghdad and Muscat would stop accepting Iranian flights from midnight on Wednesday.

Akhavan said flights scheduled for Baghdad would instead be redirected to Najaf Airport in Iraq. Iranian authorities are also negotiating with Oman over the impact of the new restrictions.

Iran’s ISNA news agency reported that other international flights, including those to Istanbul, would continue operating as scheduled.

The US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, said Washington would restrict Iranian airlines from international operations by threatening secondary sanctions against companies providing them with aviation services.

The measures mean companies could face sanctions if they provide Iranian airlines with services such as fuel, landing facilities or ticket sales.

The latest restrictions are part of Washington’s broader sanctions campaign against Tehran, which has also targeted Iran’s energy, financial, shipping, technology, gold and digital-asset sectors.

Despite the growing pressure, Iranian officials have indicated that Tehran remains open to negotiations mediated by Qatar, while maintaining that the United States must meet its conditions for renewed talks.
