How Prayer Helped My Wife Recover From Six-Month Coma — Akpabio

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has recounted how his wife, Unoma, survived a six-month coma after complications from an operation in a German hospital.

Akpabio made the disclosure during a visit to the Prayer Ground of St Padre Pio in St Giovanni Rotondo, Italy, where he said he had gone to pray for Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, Akpabio said his wife was placed on life support after the operation went wrong. He described her condition at the time as being “98 per cent dead.”

The Senate President said he prayed to the Virgin Mary and sought the intercession of St Padre Pio, using a picture of the Catholic saint while praying over his wife.

He said his wife eventually regained consciousness, describing her recovery as miraculous.

Akpabio said that after she was discharged from the hospital, his wife spent another three months before she could remember his name and those of their children.

He added that his visit to the prayer ground was his 10th and that he had returned to give thanks for his wife’s recovery.

Akpabio also said that he and other Nigerians at the site prayed for peace and an end to banditry and terrorism in Nigeria.

“We are all from Nigeria. We came to offer prayers and get blessings from God for ourselves, our families, and our dear country that is currently being ravaged by banditry and terrorism,” he said.

The Senate President described the site as holy ground and said his faith in the intercession of St Padre Pio had been strengthened by his personal experience.

He also revealed that his family gave their son the baptismal name Pio and established the Pio Football Academy in memory of the saint. According to Akpabio, the academy trains and provides scholarships for children from poor families, from the age of nine through university.

His visit comes ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, as political parties intensify preparations for the polls and insecurity remains a major concern in parts of the country.
