France, UK and Canada Renew Support for Palestinian State at UNGA.

France, Canada and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their support for Palestinian statehood and a two-state solution during the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. 

French President Emmanuel Macron criticised restrictions on humanitarian aid reaching Gaza, saying the continued suffering there should concern the international community. He also criticised Israel’s settlement activities in the occupied West Bank, including the E1 project, which he said threatens the prospects for a two-state solution. 

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the UK would not stand by while Palestinians continue to suffer. He warned that failure to translate decades of support for a two-state solution into action would further undermine public trust in politicians and international institutions. 

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced 100 million Canadian dollars ($71 million) in assistance for Palestinians. About 80 percent of the funding will support humanitarian aid, while the remaining 20 percent will support peace and security initiatives, including Canada’s programme to train Palestinian police in the occupied West Bank. 

Canada also said it intends to impose trade restrictions on goods produced in Israeli settlements in the occupied territory. Ottawa said it has already provided more than 600 million Canadian dollars ($426 million) in aid to Palestinian civilians since the beginning of the Gaza war.
