Every Nigerian Should Undergo Military Training to Understand Military Sacrifices — Defence Minister

The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd.), has proposed that every Nigerian should undergo military training to gain a better understanding of the demands, sacrifices and responsibilities involved in protecting the country.

Musa made the proposal during an appearance on the African Leadership Podcast with Ken Giami, released on Monday.

According to the minister, military training would expose Nigerians to challenges such as hunger, exhaustion, physical strain and lack of sleep, helping them better appreciate the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces.

“Every Nigerian should be able to go through military training. It will give you a different perspective about life. You will understand what it means to stay hungry and what it means to work for days without sleep,” Musa said.

He added that such training would teach endurance and help people understand the difficulties soldiers face while carrying out their duties to protect the country.

Musa also compared the sacrifices of military personnel to the biblical principle of giving one’s life for another, noting that soldiers routinely put their lives at risk for the safety and progress of the nation.

The former Chief of Defence Staff appealed to Nigerians to remember that soldiers are also family members who leave their loved ones behind while serving in difficult conditions.

He urged citizens to understand the sacrifices made by military personnel, who often operate in rain, dust, heat and at night while working to secure the country.

Musa also attributed increased infiltration across Nigeria’s borders partly to the withdrawal of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali from regional security arrangements. He said Nigeria was strengthening bilateral security relationships with countries such as Cameroon to improve security along the country’s southern borders.
