Another Body Found as Search Continues for Capsized Indonesian Ferry

Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Agency (BASARNAS) has recovered another victim from the wreckage of the Virgo Transport 8 passenger ferry, which capsized and sank in the Java Sea last week.

The ferry was carrying 243 people, including 30 crew members, when it overturned in bad weather on September 13 while travelling from Surabaya in East Java to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan.

According to authorities, divers found the latest victim inside the ship’s hull. The body will be airlifted for identification.

Search and evacuation operations are continuing with the use of divers and aircraft. As of Saturday, nine people had been confirmed dead, more than 100 had survived, and 126 remained unaccounted for.

Authorities have extended the search operation by another week because of the large number of missing passengers and the time expected to salvage and right the sunken vessel.
