A pioneering tuition-free school founded by Dr. Priscilla Chan and supported by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative has closed its doors after nearly a decade of serving children from low-income families in California.
Launched in 2016, The Primary School offered more than traditional classroom education by providing healthcare, mental health services, and family support alongside free schooling.
The decision to close the school came after its board learned that funding from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative would end following the 2025–2026 school year. Since its launch, the initiative had invested more than $125 million in the project.
Although the school gained recognition for its unique model of combining education with health and social services, it faced ongoing academic and operational challenges, including leadership changes and lower-than-average student performance on state assessments.
To help students and families during the transition, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative announced a $50 million support package. The funds will provide education savings accounts for students, assist community organizations, and help local public schools absorb the incoming students.
