Sri Lankan authorities have closed schools across the country's central highlands after heavy rains triggered deadly floods and landslides that claimed the lives of at least seven people and injured several others.
According to the country's Disaster Management Centre, five victims died when landslides buried two homes in the central region, while two others lost their lives in flood-related incidents.
The severe weather has damaged at least 129 homes and forced nearly 3,500 residents to evacuate to safer locations. Emergency response teams, including the navy and army, have been deployed to rescue people trapped by rising floodwaters and assist affected communities.
The worst-hit areas include the tea-growing districts of Nuwara Eliya and Badulla, where steep hillsides are highly vulnerable to landslides during the monsoon season.
The latest disaster comes less than a year after Cyclone Ditwah devastated the same region, killing hundreds of people and causing billions of dollars in economic losses.
Officials say schools in the affected districts will remain closed until weather conditions improve and it is safe for students and staff to return.
