Zimbabwe Ferry Disaster: Death Toll Rises to 92

At least 92 people have died after a ferry capsized on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, with rescue teams continuing efforts to recover the remaining victims.

Zimbabwean police said they recovered eight additional bodies on Monday, raising the confirmed death toll from 84 to at least 92. More than 40 divers and four boats have been deployed in the ongoing search operation.

The ferry capsized six days earlier during strong winds near the Zambian border. Although the vessel was designed to carry 90 people, authorities have not confirmed the exact number of passengers and crew on board. Earlier reports suggested that as many as 153 people may have been travelling on the overloaded ferry.

The vessel was travelling from Kariba in northern Zimbabwe to rural and fishing communities in the northwest, where boat transportation is common because of limited public transport and poor road infrastructure.

At least 18 children were among those who died. The disaster is believed to be the deadliest ferry accident of its kind in Zimbabwe.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa described the incident as a tragedy and said it highlighted serious deficiencies that needed to be addressed urgently.

Search and recovery operations remain ongoing as authorities work to locate the remaining victims.
