Zimbabwe Ferry Accident Death Toll Rises to 44

At least 44 people have died after a passenger ferry capsized on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, police said on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

The ferry overturned on Tuesday amid strong winds, with preliminary investigations suggesting that the vessel may have been overloaded.

Police said the boat was designed to carry 90 passengers, but more than 120 people may have been on board when the accident occurred.

Rescue operations are continuing, with 67 people rescued so far and taken to a nearby primary school for medical attention.

The ferry was travelling on Lake Kariba, which borders Zimbabwe and Zambia, when it capsized. Rescue teams and local boat operators are continuing to search the area for survivors and additional victims.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
