Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has awarded Elon Musk the Order of Freedom, one of Ukraine’s highest state honours, recognising his contribution to protecting lives and freedom and strengthening relations between Ukraine and the United States.
Musk, the founder of SpaceX, provided Ukraine with access to Starlink, the company’s satellite internet service, following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. The service has since become an important part of Ukraine’s communications infrastructure, including military operations.
Ukrainian commanders and soldiers have relied on Starlink to communicate, coordinate operations and maintain connections with drones. The technology has also supported Ukraine’s long-range drone operations against Russian military and economic targets.
However, Musk’s role in the war has remained controversial. Starlink does not currently operate over Russian territory, and Zelenskyy has urged Musk to reconsider the policy to allow Ukrainian forces greater satellite connectivity for operations inside Russia.
The award was announced through a presidential decree on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. Musk had not immediately commented on the honour.
Ukraine credits Starlink with playing a significant role in its military communications and drone operations since the beginning of the war.
