Wushishi Emerges Vice-President of African Educational Assessment Body

The Registrar and Chief Executive of the National Examinations Council (NECO), Dantani Wushishi, has been elected Vice-President of the Association for Educational Assessment in Africa (AEAA).

The development was announced following the conclusion of the 42nd AEAA Conference held in Arusha, Tanzania.

Nigeria has also been awarded the right to host the 2027 AEAA Conference, which is scheduled to take place in Abuja from August 16 to 20, 2027.

According to a statement by NECO’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Azeez Sani, the decisions were endorsed by the AEAA General Assembly.

The statement said the developments demonstrate the growing recognition of Nigeria’s influence in educational assessment, particularly as the sector embraces digital transformation and artificial intelligence in testing and certification.

Wushishi’s election follows his previous service on the AEAA Executive Council, where he represented the West African sub-region.

Since becoming NECO Registrar in 2021, Wushishi has overseen several reforms aimed at modernising examination administration, expanding the council’s technological infrastructure and increasing its international presence.

NECO said its examinations are currently conducted in eight foreign countries, extending the council’s operations beyond Nigeria.

Born on April 5, 1965, in Wushishi, Niger State, Wushishi is a scholar specialising in Science Education and Chemistry Education. Before joining NECO, he held several academic and administrative positions at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, and the Federal University of Technology, Minna.

These included Head of Department, Postgraduate Coordinator and Sub-Dean.

President Bola Tinubu reappointed Wushishi as NECO Registrar earlier this year, a move widely viewed as an endorsement of his administrative and technological reforms.

His election as AEAA Vice-President, alongside Nigeria’s selection to host the 2027 conference, further strengthens the country’s position in Africa’s educational assessment sector.
