A woman who legally lives in the UK was left stranded at a Spanish airport after a technical error in the UK’s eVisa system confused her with her identical twin sister.
Nidia Webb, who has lived in the UK for eight years, was reportedly stopped from boarding her flight home because her digital settled status was linked to her twin sister’s personal details instead of her own.
Webb said she was told by officials that the problem was a “known technical issue” affecting some twins in the Home Office’s digital immigration system.
She spent hours on the phone with Home Office staff trying to resolve the problem. Although officials told her it had been corrected, the confirmation email was mistakenly sent to her sister.
Webb eventually managed to board her flight after the issue was fixed. She said she did not know how long she might have remained stranded abroad if she had not spent hours trying to resolve the problem.
The UK Home Office said more than 10 million people have successfully used eVisas to prove their immigration status. It acknowledged that errors can occur but said most cases are resolved within 24 hours.
The incident has renewed concerns about the UK’s eVisa system. Immigration campaigners said similar cases have occurred and warned that people need a reliable way to prove their legal status.
The campaign group the3million said the rollout of the eVisa system had been rushed and that some people had previously been denied boarding because of problems with their digital immigration records.
