Indonesia Earthquake Death Toll Climbs to 100.

The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck eastern Indonesia on August 15 has risen to 100, according to the country’s disaster agency.

The magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck East Nusa Tenggara province and was followed by thousands of aftershocks. More than 73,000 homes were damaged, while about 180,000 people were forced to evacuate.

Disaster agency chief Suharyanto said the death toll increased after more injured victims died while receiving treatment. More than 1,600 people were injured.

Authorities are continuing relief operations, using helicopters, trucks and motorcycles to deliver aid to affected communities.

The earthquake is Indonesia’s deadliest since 2022, when a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in West Java killed hundreds of people.

Indonesia, an archipelago of about 290 million people, lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where tectonic plates meet and earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur frequently.
