Wildfires Continue to Burn Across France and Spain as Heat Fuels New Threats.

Wildfires continued to rage across parts of France and Spain on Sunday despite signs that some of the largest blazes were beginning to come under control, authorities said.

Thousands of firefighters from across Europe remain on the front lines, battling lingering flames and preventing fresh outbreaks as soaring temperatures and dry conditions keep the wildfire risk extremely high.

In southwestern France, particularly in the Gironde region and the Var department, massive fires have destroyed tens of thousands of hectares of forest. Officials said the country's largest wildfire in decades has been contained but has not yet been fully extinguished.

In Spain, fires that swept through vast areas near Madrid have eased, allowing many evacuated residents to return to their homes. However, emergency crews continue to fight flare-ups and new hotspots in provinces including Leon and Caceres.

The wildfires forced thousands of people to flee their communities, while homes, campsites, forests and other properties suffered extensive damage. Firefighting aircraft, helicopters and ground crews have been deployed to contain the remaining flames.

Scientists warn that Europe, the world's fastest-warming continent, is becoming increasingly vulnerable to destructive wildfires due to rising temperatures, prolonged droughts and strong winds. Experts say the number of summer days with conditions favourable for wildfires has more than doubled since the early 1980s.

Authorities have urged residents in high-risk areas to remain vigilant, as forecasts of continued hot weather could trigger new wildfires in the coming days.
