Students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) have commenced a peaceful sit-at-home protest in response to the recent increase in tuition fees approved by the institution's management.
The directive was issued by the Students' Union Government (SUG), which urged all students to remain at home on Monday and boycott lectures and other academic activities. The union said the action followed unsuccessful discussions with the school's management over the reviewed fees.
According to a statement signed by SUG President Afolabi Temitope and other union executives, several meetings were held with the management after the new fees appeared on the students' portal, but the concerns raised by students were not addressed.
The union noted that Nigeria's current economic challenges have made it increasingly difficult for many students and parents to cope with additional financial burdens, stressing that the welfare of students must remain a top priority.
The SUG described the protest as a peaceful demonstration aimed at drawing the attention of the authorities to reconsider the fee hike. It emphasized that the action should not be interpreted as an invitation to violence, destruction of property, or disruption of peace on campus.
Students were advised to remain calm, avoid confrontations with school officials and security personnel, and rely only on official information released by the Students' Union.
The union also appealed to shuttle operators, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, and other transport providers around the campus to suspend operations in solidarity with the protest.
While reaffirming its commitment to continued dialogue with the institution's management, the Students' Union expressed hope that the peaceful protest would encourage the authorities to review the fee increase in the interest of students.
