US Sets 2028 Trial Date for Alleged 9/11 Mastermind

A US military court is set to begin the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind behind the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, in June 2028, according to reports citing a judge’s ruling.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was regarded as one of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden’s senior lieutenants. He was captured in Pakistan in March 2003 and subsequently held for three years in secret CIA detention facilities.

He was transferred to the US military detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 2006, where he has remained in custody while legal proceedings over the 9/11 case have continued.

The planned 2028 trial will be held before a US military commission.
