The United States military says it carried out a strike on a suspected drug-trafficking boat in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, killing two people.
US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) said the strike took place on Sunday against a vessel allegedly operating along established drug-trafficking routes. The command said intelligence had confirmed the boat was involved in narcotics trafficking.
SOUTHCOM Commander General Francis L. Donovan said the operation was intended to disrupt drug-trafficking networks and prevent illegal drugs from reaching the United States.
Video released by the US military appeared to show a small boat moving across the ocean before a large explosion.
The strike is part of the US military's broader Operation Southern Spear, which Washington says is aimed at combating drug cartels in the Western Hemisphere. According to AFP, more than 200 people have been killed in US strikes on suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the Eastern Pacific and Caribbean since the operation began.
However, the US government has not publicly provided definitive evidence for every vessel targeted in the strikes. Legal experts and human rights organisations have questioned the legality of the attacks, warning that some could amount to extrajudicial killings.
The Pentagon's inspector general announced in May that it would review whether the military followed standard procedures when selecting and targeting the vessels. The review, however, will not examine whether the strikes themselves were legally authorised.
