US Judge Orders Release of Woman Accused of Vandalising World War II Memorial

A US judge has ordered the release of a Kentucky woman accused of vandalising the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., last week, according to court records.

Melissa Farris, 41, was arrested and charged with two felony counts following the incident. US Attorney Jeanine Pirro, Washington’s top federal prosecutor, criticised the decision to release her and urged the court to reconsider, arguing that Farris posed a flight risk.

As part of her release conditions, Farris surrendered her passport and was barred from leaving the continental United States without court approval.

The World War II Memorial was vandalised on August 13, when its fountain was covered with soapy bubbles and graffiti. The words “Clean hands Dirty $” were painted on part of the memorial, along with red and green paint.

Earlier videos posted on Farris’ Facebook account reportedly showed her spray-painting the memorial. She said the action was intended to draw attention to what she described as the misuse of US tax dollars, corporate racketeering, embezzlement and alleged slave labour practices.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for September 3.

The case comes as Pirro faces scrutiny over her handling of other vandalism charges. President Donald Trump recently criticised her after the Justice Department dropped charges against four people accused of vandalising Washington’s Reflecting Pool.
