Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has criticised the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for destroying cannabis farms in Edo State.
Sowore called on the Federal Government to reconsider its approach to cannabis cultivation, urging the legalisation and proper regulation of the plant to unlock its medicinal and industrial potential.
In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, Sowore argued that destroying cannabis farms was wasteful, particularly as Nigeria continues to face widespread poverty and unemployment.
He said a regulated cannabis industry could create jobs, generate government revenue, support scientific research and contribute to economic development.
His comments followed an NDLEA operation in Edo State during which two cannabis plantations were destroyed. According to the agency, the farms had an estimated combined yield of about 4,628.9 kilogrammes of cannabis.
The first plantation, located in Ugboku, Igbanke Forest, in Orhionmwon Local Government Area, covered approximately 0.7 hectares and had an estimated yield of 1,749.26 kilogrammes. A 40-year-old suspect, Agholor Elebojie, was arrested in connection with the farm.
The second plantation covered about 1.15 hectares and had an estimated yield of 2,879.72 kilogrammes. NDLEA officials also recovered two bags of processed cannabis weighing 12.4 kilogrammes.
The Edo State NDLEA Commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the operations were conducted following credible intelligence and were part of the agency's nationwide efforts to dismantle illicit drug production sites.
In separate operations in Oluku and Abuja Quarters in Benin City, NDLEA operatives also arrested 10 suspected drug traffickers and recovered various illicit substances.
The suspects have been taken into custody while investigations continue ahead of possible prosecution.
