A Syrian court has sentenced Wassim al-Assad, a cousin of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, to death after finding him guilty of multiple crimes committed during the country’s nearly 14-year war.
The Fourth Criminal Court in Damascus issued the sentence on Tuesday, convicting Wassim al-Assad of premeditated murder, torture and other serious offences.
Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan said the crimes included murder accompanied by torture and brutality, which the court classified as crimes against humanity and war crimes.
Wassim al-Assad appeared in person in the courtroom as the judges announced the verdict, making him the first member of the al-Assad family to be tried and sentenced in person in Syria.
Former President Bashar al-Assad and his brother Maher al-Assad were also sentenced to death one week earlier, but the verdicts were issued in absentia because they are living in exile in Russia.
Wassim al-Assad has previously faced international sanctions over alleged drug trafficking and his role in pro-government paramilitary groups. He was also accused of establishing and leading armed groups and participating in military operations targeting civilian areas in Eastern Ghouta.
However, the court acquitted him of drug-trafficking charges, citing insufficient evidence of his direct involvement.
The case forms part of Syria’s ongoing transitional justice process, which seeks to prosecute individuals accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity during Bashar al-Assad’s rule.
