US-Iran Tensions: Vessel Hit as Hormuz Shipping Faces New Threat

A vessel travelling through the Strait of Hormuz was struck by an unidentified projectile, causing damage to its engine room and injuring a crew member, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO).

The incident occurred as tensions between the United States and Iran remained high following the expiration of a memorandum of understanding between the two countries. US President Donald Trump said Washington was not seeking an extension of the agreement and called on Tehran to surrender.

UKMTO said the vessel was travelling outbound through the strategic waterway when it was hit. The remaining crew members were assisted by the Omani coastguard, while authorities launched an investigation. No environmental damage was reported.

Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts over the Gaza conflict continued. US envoy Jared Kushner held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a Hamas delegation, with Washington pushing for the next phase of its Gaza ceasefire roadmap.

Elsewhere, Iran's economic crisis has deepened, with annual inflation reportedly reaching 66 percent. Food and beverage prices rose sharply, adding to the pressure on households already struggling with the impact of sanctions and regional conflict.

Israeli forces also continued operations in the occupied West Bank and southern Lebanon, while Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged Trump to continue diplomatic efforts with Iran.
