FG Evacuates 83 More Nigerians from South Africa Amid Xenophobic Attacks

The Federal Government has announced the evacuation of another 83 Nigerians from South Africa amid growing concerns over Afrophobic attacks and anti-foreigner sentiments in the country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Monday that the returnees are expected to arrive at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.

According to the ministry, the Nigerians will depart Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg at 3:35 p.m. local time aboard South African Airways and are expected to arrive in Lagos at about 8:45 p.m.

The ministry disclosed that the latest evacuation was made possible through the intervention and sponsorship of air tickets by private individuals.

The development comes after the conclusion of the Federal Government’s voluntary repatriation programme, through which nearly 1,490 Nigerians were evacuated from South Africa amid concerns over attacks and discrimination against foreigners.

The ministry reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting the welfare and dignity of Nigerians living at home and abroad.

It also described Nigerians in the diaspora as important contributors to national development and urged private organisations, state governments and other well-meaning Nigerians to support efforts to respond to consular emergencies.

The Federal Government further said it would continue diplomatic engagements with South Africa to address the root causes of Afrophobia, prevent attacks and discrimination against Nigerians, and ensure that perpetrators of violence are held accountable.

The ministry expressed appreciation to the private sponsors who supported the latest evacuation, describing their intervention as an example of collective efforts to protect Nigerians abroad.
