US Deports Nearly 2,300 Mexicans to Guatemala Despite Mexico’s Objections

The United States has deported about 2,300 Mexican nationals to Guatemala, despite strong objections from the Mexican government, as President Donald Trump’s administration intensifies its immigration enforcement campaign.

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo said his country had received approximately 2,284 Mexican deportees from the US this year. He explained that the Mexicans are transported through Guatemala and returned to Mexico within 24 hours, in coordination with Mexican authorities.

The deportations are part of the Trump administration’s growing use of third-country removals, in which migrants are sent to countries other than their own. Critics argue that the policy is intended to deter migrants from attempting to return to the United States.

Mexico has rejected the practice, saying its citizens have the right to return to their country. Mexican officials also expressed concern over reports that some Mexican nationals have been sent to Honduras.

US officials defended the deportations, saying the Department of Homeland Security is using lawful measures to implement what the administration describes as the largest deportation operation in US history.

Human rights advocates, however, have criticized the policy as an intimidation tactic that could expose migrants to unnecessary hardship and fear.

The issue has further strained relations between the United States and Mexico, which remain major trading partners. Mexico has also raised concerns over the treatment and deaths of its citizens in US immigration custody.
