A 37-year-old man has been arrested in connection with one of the devastating wildfires burning around Spokane, Washington, as authorities continue to battle multiple blazes that have forced about 65,000 people to evacuate.
The suspect, Aaron Farinacci, was taken into custody on Monday and charged with first-degree arson in relation to the Old Trails Fire. According to the Spokane County Sheriff's Office, a witness reportedly saw him in the area where the fire is believed to have started. He is being held on a $1 million bond pending further legal proceedings.
Firefighters remain on the front lines as three major wildfires continue to burn across the region near the Idaho border. Officials said the fires have scorched more than 8,000 acres (3,248 hectares), while aerial surveys estimate that between 700 and 1,110 homes and other structures have been destroyed since the fires erupted over the weekend.
Authorities confirmed that approximately 65,000 residents have been displaced. No injuries have been reported so far, although emergency officials are still trying to contact 14 individuals who have not responded to phone calls. Officials stressed that they are not currently considered missing.
Climate experts say rising global temperatures, prolonged drought, and unusually dry vegetation have created conditions that allow wildfires to spread more rapidly. Eastern Washington experienced one of its warmest winters on record, resulting in a severe snow shortage that contributed to this year's extreme fire season.
The wildfire crisis comes as several regions around the world face extreme weather. Heatwaves continue across parts of Japan and South Korea, while wildfires are also affecting Greece, Spain, France, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco.
