A police officer and two civilians have been killed following an attack by suspected Lakurawa bandits on Girkau community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
The attack, which occurred on Monday, also left several residents injured, while the attackers reportedly rustled an unspecified number of cattle and set fire to two security vehicles belonging to the Nigeria Police Force and the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps.
According to the Sokoto State Police Command, security operatives responded swiftly after receiving a distress call and engaged the attackers in a gun battle, forcing them to retreat. However, one police officer lost his life during the exchange.
Police spokesperson Ahmed Rufai confirmed the incident, stating that the command has intensified security operations in the area to prevent further attacks and ensure the safety of residents.
Local residents said the gunmen stormed the community heavily armed, firing indiscriminately at security personnel and villagers, causing many people to flee.
Community sources identified the victims as police officer Hussaini Manyu, an elderly resident, Bala Wakili, and a young herder who was allegedly killed after refusing to surrender his cattle.
A farmer was also reportedly shot while working on his farmland and is receiving medical treatment. Residents further alleged that a married woman was assaulted after resisting an attempted sexual assault during the attack.
Community leaders described the incident as one of the deadliest attacks in recent months and called on the Federal Government and the Sokoto State Government to strengthen security across Kebbe and neighbouring local government areas to prevent future attacks.
