Tsinghua University has been ranked the world’s best university for engineering in the latest U.S. News Best Global Universities subject rankings for 2026–2027.
The Beijing-based university achieved a perfect overall score of 100 in engineering and ranked first in six performance indicators, including research publications, conference papers, total citations and highly cited papers.
Asian universities dominated the rankings, with all of the top 10 institutions coming from Asia. Mainland China accounted for seven of the top 10 positions, highlighting the region’s growing strength in engineering research and education.
Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University ranked second, while Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Zhejiang University tied for third. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was the highest-ranked university outside Asia, coming in at 12th.

The engineering ranking covered 1,614 universities worldwide and was based on research performance, including publications from 2020 to 2024 and citations recorded through November 25, 2025. Universities were assessed using 12 indicators and needed at least 250 engineering publications during the five-year period to qualify.
Tsinghua also performed strongly in other disciplines, ranking first globally in nine subjects, including artificial intelligence, computer science, chemistry, materials science and environmental engineering.
In the overall U.S. News Best Global Universities ranking, Tsinghua was ranked first in Asia, first in China and sixth worldwide.
