US President Donald Trump has threatened to reconsider the United States’ military relationship with South Korea after Seoul refused to participate in the US-Israeli war against Iran.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News released on Sunday, Trump suggested that Washington could reduce or reconsider the scope of its military presence in South Korea.
Trump complained that the United States spends billions of dollars supporting allies while receiving what he described as insufficient assistance in return. He specifically cited South Korea as an example.
He said he would be “a fool” not to take action against countries that, in his view, were unwilling to support the United States.
“When they are not willing to do anything for you, you can’t be a fool and help them,” Trump said.
Trump has previously ordered the Pentagon to scale back joint military exercises with South Korea, describing the drills as costly and arguing that they could be viewed as hostile toward North Korea.
The latest comments have raised concerns about the future of the US-South Korea alliance, with analysts warning that Washington’s changing approach could create uncertainty among its allies.
South Korea has faced pressure to support US military operations linked to the conflict with Iran, but Seoul has declined to participate directly in the war.
