United States President Donald Trump has signed two new executive orders aimed at limiting birthright citizenship, marking another attempt to tighten U.S. immigration rules despite an earlier Supreme Court ruling affirming the constitutional protection.
One of the executive orders broadens existing exceptions to birthright citizenship by excluding children born to individuals accused of terrorism, those allegedly attempting to obtain citizenship through fraudulent means, and certain births in U.S. territories. Existing exceptions already prevent automatic citizenship for children of foreign diplomats and invading forces.
The second order directs federal agencies to intensify efforts against "birth tourism," a practice in which foreign nationals travel to the United States primarily to give birth so their children can obtain U.S. citizenship.
Speaking at the White House, Trump criticized the Supreme Court's earlier decision that blocked his previous attempt to restrict birthright citizenship, saying his administration is pursuing a revised legal strategy.
The latest executive actions follow the Supreme Court's June ruling that Trump's previous order violated the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment, which guarantees citizenship to nearly everyone born on U.S. soil.
Legal experts expect the new executive orders to face immediate court challenges, arguing they may also conflict with the U.S. Constitution. Analysts say the move reflects Trump's continued focus on immigration as a key political issue ahead of upcoming elections.
