US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order restricting the purchase and installation of certain foreign-made equipment used in the country’s electricity grid.
The order declares a national emergency over what the administration describes as an “unusual and extraordinary foreign threat” to the US bulk-power system.
According to the directive, some foreign-produced equipment, software and digital technologies could expose the power grid to cybersecurity, operational and national-security risks.
The US Department of Energy has been given 120 days to develop regulations for implementing the new policy. Utility companies are also expected to review their systems and identify equipment that could fall under the restrictions.
However, the executive order does not impose a blanket ban on all foreign-made equipment already operating across the US electricity network. Energy Secretary Chris Wright will determine conditions under which affected equipment can continue to be used.
The decision is the latest step by the Trump administration to strengthen the security of critical US infrastructure amid concerns over potential foreign interference in the country’s power system.
