Trump Signs Order Renaming Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario “Lake America,” amid growing tensions between the United States and Canada over trade.

Trump signed the order on August 27, 2026, at the White House, saying the name change would take effect immediately. He linked the move to his criticism of Canada’s trade relationship with the United States.

Trump accused Canadian officials of treating the US poorly and said the idea of renaming the lake had been under consideration for some time.

Lake Ontario is one of the five Great Lakes and is shared by the United States and Canada. Its name comes from an Indigenous Huron term associated with “lake of shining waters.” The Canadian province of Ontario later took its name from the lake.

The move follows Trump’s earlier decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” after returning to the White House in January 2025.

During the signing ceremony, Trump also suggested that other bodies of water could eventually receive America-themed names.

“We have a gulf and we have a lake. Now all we need is an ocean,” Trump said, raising the possibility of renaming parts of the Atlantic or Pacific Oceans.
