US President Donald Trump has announced the cancellation of a planned large-scale military strike against Iran, saying that negotiations have made significant progress and that the "framework of a deal" has been agreed upon.
Trump made the announcement late Saturday on his Truth Social platform, just one day after reports suggested that the United States and Israel were preparing to target Iran's energy infrastructure.
According to the US president, the decision followed requests from Iran and several Middle Eastern countries to delay military action while efforts to finalize an agreement continue. He said the proposed deal would include the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and measures aimed at addressing concerns over Iran's nuclear programme.
Iran has not officially responded to Trump's statement. Earlier on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned that any attack by the United States or Israel would receive a "proportionate response."
Meanwhile, US media outlet Axios reported that Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman urged Trump during a phone call to cancel the planned strikes and return to diplomatic negotiations.
The development comes after Trump warned on Friday that the United States would respond "very hard" to Iran amid escalating regional tensions.
In response to the heightened security situation, the US Department of State issued travel and security alerts for Americans in 10 Middle Eastern countries, advising them to exercise increased caution and consider leaving affected areas if necessary.
The latest announcement has raised hopes that diplomatic efforts could help prevent a wider regional conflict, although negotiations are expected to continue in the coming days.
