Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), have successfully foiled a terrorist attack on Kukawa town in Borno State, killing several terrorists and significantly weakening the group’s fighting capability and mobility through a coordinated ground and air operation.
The Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday.
According to the statement, terrorists attacked troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion deployed in Kukawa at about 10:50 p.m. on August 28, 2026.
The troops quickly responded with direct and indirect fire, repelling the attack and forcing the terrorists to withdraw towards the Cross Kauwa axis.
Several terrorists were killed during the confrontation, while others were reportedly wounded as they fled the area. Troops later recovered the bodies of some of the terrorists.
As the terrorists withdrew on motorcycles towards Cross Kauwa, the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI was deployed to intercept them.
Despite difficult weather conditions, the air force successfully struck terrorists who had taken cover under trees, killing an estimated 10 of them.
Meanwhile, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets of the Multinational Joint Task Force tracked about 20 motorcycles carrying fleeing terrorists towards the Tunbuns/Kangarwa axis.
Based on the intelligence, the Air Component carried out a follow-up precision strike, killing an additional 15 terrorists and destroying 10 motorcycles.
Ground troops subsequently recovered two motorcycles, killed another terrorist and recovered ammunition and other items during exploitation operations.
The military said the coordinated ground and air operation disrupted the attack, prevented the terrorists from escaping freely and further weakened their ability to regroup or launch sustained operations in the area.
Following the engagement, troops were reinforced by air with essential combat supplies to maintain operational effectiveness and pressure on the terrorists.
Four military personnel sustained injuries that were not life-threatening. The wounded soldiers were evacuated by air for medical treatment and were said to be in stable condition.
Troops have since begun reorganising and conducting further operations in the area, while battle-damage assessment and additional evaluation of the encounter are ongoing.
The military said the successful defence of Kukawa demonstrated Operation HADIN KAI’s ability to detect, contain and respond decisively to terrorist threats through the integration of ground forces, air assets and intelligence.
It added that the operation also highlighted the resilience and professionalism of troops operating across the North-East.
Operation HADIN KAI, according to the statement, remains committed to offensive operations, intelligence-led surveillance and coordinated ground and air actions aimed at degrading terrorist capabilities, restricting their freedom of movement and protecting communities across the North-East.
