President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has criticised former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over his promise to restore fuel subsidies if elected president in the 2027 general election.
Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the pledge during an interview on Wednesday.
Speaking on Thursday while receiving Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu described the promise as a demonstration of “serious ignorance” of governance and the economy.
Although Tinubu did not mention Atiku by name, he said the removal of the fuel subsidy had improved the financial position of state governments and enabled them to pay workers’ salaries and pensions more regularly.
The President recalled that before he assumed office in 2023, 27 state governments were reportedly unable to pay salaries and pensions and depended on Federal Government bailouts.
He also referred to Osun State, recalling that one of the state’s former governors was nicknamed “Half Salary” because of difficulties in paying workers’ full salaries.
Tinubu argued that savings from the subsidy removal had helped governments finance infrastructure projects, healthcare, education, housing and other public services.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, said ₦15.8 trillion accrued to the Federation Account between June 2023 and December 2025 as a result of the removal of the fuel subsidy.
According to Oyedele, ₦5.4 trillion of the amount went to the Federal Government, while ₦10.4 trillion was shared among state and local governments.
He added that the Federal Government used part of its share to finance wage adjustments, minimum wage increases and allowances for public servants, which amounted to ₦9.39 trillion during the period.
