A Nigerian student from Gombe State, Maryam Ibrahim Dan-Azumi, has emerged the overall winner of the second category of the 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur’an Recitation Competition held in Makkah, Saudi Arabia.
Maryam, a student of Abubakar Siddiq Community School for Qur’an Memorisation in Gombe, represented Nigeria at the prestigious international competition. She competed in the category covering memorisation of the entire Qur’an, recitation, Tajweed and interpretation.
Key facts about Maryam’s achievement
1. She won first place in Saudi Arabia
Maryam emerged first in the second category, which involves memorisation of 60 Hizb of the Qur’an with Tafsir. She scored an impressive 97.70 marks.
2. She received a prize worth about ₦120 million
Her victory came with a prize reportedly valued at ₦120 million, further recognising her achievement in Qur’anic scholarship.
3. She made history as a female contestant
The 2026 edition was historic because it marked the first time female contestants participated in the 46-year history of the competition. Maryam subsequently became the winner of her category.
4. She is from Gombe State
Maryam hails from Gombe State and developed her Qur’anic memorisation skills at Abubakar Siddiq Community School for Qur’an Memorisation in Herwagana Quarters, Gombe.
5. She had already won at the national level
Before her international victory, Maryam won the female category at the 40th National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Maiduguri, Borno State, scoring 97.70 marks in memorisation of the entire Qur’an with Tafsir.
She was rewarded with a new Toyota Corolla, an Umrah package and other prizes.
6. She has won several other Qur’anic competitions
In February 2024, Maryam emerged overall winner of the National Qur’an Recitation Competition of Nana Asma’u. Her success has taken her from local and state competitions to the national and international stages.
7. She is studying Physics Education
Beyond her Qur’anic achievements, Maryam is also pursuing a university education. She is currently in her final year at Gombe State University, where she studies Physics Education.
8. Qur’anic excellence runs in her family
Maryam’s elder sister, Hajara Ibrahim Dan-Azumi, also won an international Qur’anic competition in 2024. Hajara emerged overall winner of the 18th Hashemite Jordan International Qur’anic Competition for Females in Jordan.
9. She has received recognition from Nigerian leaders
President Bola Tinubu congratulated Maryam on her achievement, describing her success as a source of pride for Nigeria.
Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Yahaya also congratulated Maryam, her family, teachers and the Muslim community, describing her achievement as a major source of pride for Gombe State and Nigeria.
10. Her journey progressed from local to international competitions
According to Governor Yahaya, Maryam progressed from winning at the local government level to becoming the best in Gombe State, then winning nationally before representing Nigeria and emerging victorious internationally in Makkah.
11. Her victory has brought international recognition to Nigeria
Maryam’s achievement has placed Gombe State and Nigeria in the spotlight at one of the world's major Qur’anic competitions. Her victory is particularly historic because it came in the same year that women were allowed to participate in the competition for the first time.
Her success, together with that of her elder sister Hajara, highlights the family’s remarkable record in Qur’anic competitions.
