Ethel Caterham, recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest living person, has celebrated her 117th birthday.
Caterham was born on August 21, 1909, in the United Kingdom. Over the course of her remarkable life, she has witnessed more than a century of major historical events and changes, including several generations of the British royal family.
She celebrated her birthday privately with family and friends and thanked people for their warm wishes.
Caterham recently revealed that she has experienced several memorable “firsts” this year, including stroking a llama and holding hands with King Charles III.
One of the highlights of her later years was meeting King Charles in September 2025. During the meeting, she reportedly recalled watching his investiture as Prince of Wales in 1969.
Guinness World Records recognised Caterham as the world’s oldest living person after Brazilian nun Inah Canabarro Lucas died at the age of 116 last year. Caterham is also recognised as the world’s oldest living woman.
She has previously suggested that her relaxed approach to life may have contributed to her longevity. She said she avoids arguments, listens to others and does what she likes.
Caterham is the seventh of eight siblings, and one of her siblings reportedly lived to the age of 104.
She was married to Norman Caterham, who died in 1976. She also outlived her two daughters, Gem and Anne.
Today, Caterham is a grandmother of three and a great-grandmother of five. In her younger years, she worked as a nanny before later running a nursery.
She currently lives in a care home in Surrey, England.
Her 117th birthday was celebrated privately with members of her family, according to Guinness World Records.
