President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences to the families of victims of a boat accident in Gorau Community, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, which claimed at least 46 lives and left several others missing.
The boat, carrying 77 passengers, including farmers, women and children, reportedly capsized shortly after leaving the community on Thursday morning.
Tinubu described the incident as a tragic loss and extended his sympathy to the government and people of Sokoto State.
He also commended emergency responders and local authorities for their rescue and recovery efforts. The President directed relevant federal agencies, including the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to work with the Sokoto State Government to strengthen safety measures on the waterways and prevent similar incidents.
According to the Sokoto State Police Command, 46 bodies had been recovered while 15 passengers were rescued alive. Search-and-rescue operations involved local divers, NEMA, the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the police.
Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of those who died and the speedy recovery of those injured, while assuring the people of Sokoto State of the Federal Government’s support.
The accident occurred exactly one year after another boat accident in Kijio Community, also in Goronyo Local Government Area.
