Three local vigilantes from the same family were shot dead after suspected gunmen attacked them during a community security patrol in Tarai community, Jol district of Riyom Local Government Area, Plateau State.

The attack reportedly happened around 10:47 p.m. on Tuesday when the armed assailants stormed the area and opened fire on the volunteers who were protecting residents against possible attacks.

The victims were identified as Dachung Danjuma (51), Victor Danjuma (37), and Nyam Danjuma (35). The three biological brothers were killed at the scene, leaving their family and the entire community in mourning.

According to local residents, the brothers were carrying out their routine night patrol when they were ambushed by the attackers, forcing many residents to flee their homes.

Victor Danjuma, who was married with five children, was among those killed. His wife and children had reportedly left the community two weeks earlier after violence in a nearby village and were preparing to return before the tragic incident occurred.

A spokesperson for the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) confirmed the attack, describing the killings as heartbreaking. The group called on security agencies to strengthen protection for vulnerable communities in Riyom and other parts of Plateau State and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

As of the time of reporting, security authorities had not issued an official statement on the incident.
