Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to deliver a rare public speech on Wednesday from self-imposed exile in India, marking two years since she was removed from power during the 2024 student-led uprising.
The 78-year-old former leader will address supporters via video link at an event organised by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia. She is expected to speak alongside her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, and senior members of the Awami League.
Political observers believe Hasina may use the occasion to reaffirm plans to return to Bangladesh later this year, despite facing a death sentence handed down in absentia over allegations related to the deadly crackdown on anti-government protests in 2024. She has consistently rejected the charges, describing the verdict as politically motivated and legally invalid.
Bangladesh's government has barred local media from broadcasting the speech, while officials have continued to press India to extradite the former prime minister. India, however, has maintained that the event is privately organised and that its government has no involvement.
Hasina has lived in New Delhi since fleeing Bangladesh after nationwide protests forced her resignation. Her return remains uncertain, with analysts warning it could intensify political tensions despite improving diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and India.
The speech is expected to provide fresh insight into Hasina's political future and the direction of the Awami League, which was barred from participating in Bangladesh's most recent general election.
