The Jigawa State Government has approved the sum of ₦586.26 million for the renovation of facilities at the Maigatari Border Free Zone and the nearby Government Guest House in Gumel as part of efforts to strengthen cross-border trade and attract investment.
The approval was granted during the State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday in Dutse.
Speaking after the meeting, the Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Sagir Musa, said the project is designed to improve infrastructure that supports trade, investment, and economic development.
According to him, upgrading the Maigatari Border Free Zone will enhance its operations, encourage commercial activities, and promote trade between Jigawa State and neighbouring countries, particularly the Republic of Niger.
Musa noted that the border trade zone is strategically positioned to serve as a major commercial gateway, attracting both local and foreign investors while creating employment opportunities and stimulating sustainable economic growth.
He added that the Government Guest House in Gumel will also be renovated to provide improved accommodation for government officials, investors, development partners, and other stakeholders visiting the area for business and official engagements.
The commissioner said both projects form part of the state government's broader economic development strategy aimed at improving the ease of doing business, expanding regional trade, strengthening economic ties with neighbouring countries, and delivering long-term benefits to the people of Jigawa State.
