Bauchi Governor Orders Security Forces to Crack Down on Criminals

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has directed security personnel to intensify intelligence operations and take decisive action against criminals operating across the state, particularly those involved in banditry and illegal mining.

The governor gave the directive while receiving the newly appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander of Operation Safe Haven/Operation Enduring Peace, Major General Maxwell Dangana, during a courtesy visit to the Government House in Bauchi.

Governor Mohammed stressed that Bauchi must not become a refuge for criminal elements, adding that the state government remains committed to supporting security agencies in maintaining peace and protecting residents.

He identified illegal mining as a major factor fueling insecurity, alleging that criminal groups use proceeds from the activity to finance violence in rural communities. According to him, bandits and illegal miners have continued to attack villages, displace residents, and prevent farmers from cultivating their lands, posing a serious threat to food production and the state's economy.

The governor urged stronger collaboration among neighbouring states to dismantle criminal networks and illegal mining operations. He also warned that anyone found aiding illegal mining should face the full weight of the law.

«"Intensify your intelligence operations and spare no criminal. Even if my own son is involved in illegal mining, deal with him according to the law," Mohammed said.»

Earlier, Major General Maxwell Dangana explained that his visit formed part of a familiarisation tour following his appointment two weeks ago as Commander of Operation Safe Haven and Operation Enduring Peace.

He said the tour was aimed at assessing the security situation, identifying operational challenges, and reviewing existing strategies to strengthen security across the areas under his command.

Dangana assured the governor that the military would continue to evaluate its operations and adopt improved measures to enhance the safety of lives and property in Bauchi State and neighbouring communities.
