A 15-year-old boy, Isah Muhammad, has drowned in a pond known as Sterling Pond along Disina Road in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at approximately 4:30 p.m., according to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The NSCDC spokesperson in Jigawa State, ASC Badaruddeen Tijjani, said the command received a distress call and immediately deployed officers from the Takur Site Division to the scene.
The rescue team recovered the teenager from the pond and rushed him to the General Hospital in Dutse, where doctors confirmed that he had died before or shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Following the confirmation of his death, the victim's body was released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The incident has sparked renewed concern among residents over the dangers posed by water-filled ponds during the rainy season. Community members urged parents to closely monitor their children and prevent them from playing near deep water bodies.
Jigawa State NSCDC Commandant, Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and called on residents to exercise greater caution around ponds, rivers, and other dangerous water bodies to help prevent similar tragedies.
