Russian Missile and Drone Assault Kills 17 in Ukraine as Zelenskyy Urges Faster Air Defence Support

At least 17 people have been killed after Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv and surrounding areas, Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday.

According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian forces fired 24 ballistic missiles, four cruise missiles and 115 drones, targeting civilian infrastructure, including warehouses, logistics centres, a railway station, and commercial facilities.

Ukraine's State Emergency Service said rescue and cleanup operations were ongoing in several affected areas, including Brovary and Bucha, where warehouses were heavily damaged and fires broke out.

Zelenskyy said many of the casualties could have been prevented if Ukraine had received additional missile interceptor systems from its international partners. He stressed that delays in supplying advanced air defence systems continue to put civilian lives at risk.

A presidential adviser, Serhii Beskrestnov, accused Russia of deliberately targeting civilian businesses and logistics hubs as part of an intensified campaign against Ukraine's economy and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, reports indicate the United States is discussing several options to replenish Ukraine's depleted Patriot missile interceptor stockpiles, including allowing some components to be produced in Ukraine before final assembly in Germany.

Ukraine also carried out retaliatory drone strikes inside Russia, reportedly hitting a Wildberries logistics facility in the Tula region and an oil refinery in Bashkortostan. Russian authorities said hundreds of Ukrainian drones were intercepted overnight.

President Zelenskyy has renewed calls on the G7 and the European Union to tighten sanctions on Russian companies involved in manufacturing ballistic missiles, arguing that stronger economic pressure is needed to reduce Russia's ability to continue its attacks.
