Four people have been killed in a fresh attack by suspected armed herders on Abaushwa community in Nzorov Council Ward, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
The attack reportedly occurred around midnight on Monday, when the assailants stormed the community, broke into homes, and attacked residents while they were asleep. Several other people sustained injuries and were taken to the General Hospital in Gbajimba for treatment. One of the injured later died, bringing the death toll to four.
A resident, identified only as Atoundo, described the attack as unprovoked, saying the gunmen invaded the village without warning and killed innocent residents inside their homes.
Dr. Frank Kyungun, a former Executive Secretary of the Benue State Teaching Service Board and an indigene of the community, also condemned the incident, describing it as a senseless and unprovoked assault. He said community leaders had appealed to residents to remain calm while security agencies investigate the attack.
The Chairman of Guma Local Government Area, Morris Orwough, condemned the killings and announced that security personnel had been deployed to Abaushwa to restore peace, protect lives and property, and prevent further violence. He urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information.
The Benue State Police Command confirmed the incident. Police spokesperson DSP Peter Aondona said four people were killed by suspected bandits and assured that investigations were ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible. Authorities said efforts have been intensified to bring the perpetrators to justice.
