More than 150 migrants attempting to cross the English Channel to the United Kingdom were rescued after their overcrowded boat caught fire near the French coast on Tuesday.
French and British rescue teams launched a joint emergency operation near Boulogne-sur-Mer after the vessel caught fire, forcing several passengers into the sea. According to French maritime authorities, all 157 people on board were safely rescued.
Officials said five migrants had earlier asked to be evacuated overnight, but the remaining passengers initially refused assistance and continued their journey toward the UK before the boat's engine caught fire.
The incident comes amid a rise in small-boat crossings since UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham took office two weeks ago. More than 2,000 migrants have reportedly crossed the English Channel during that period.
Immigration remains a major political issue in the UK, with the government pledging tougher measures to curb irregular Channel crossings. Human rights organisations, however, argue that current UK asylum rules leave many people with no safe or legal route to seek protection.
Following the rescue, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called for stricter immigration policies, saying stronger measures are needed to prevent dangerous Channel crossings and save lives.
